The annual UK Coach Rally took place last weekend in Blackpool, marking the 62nd anniversary since it’s inception in 1955. This year saw over 50 entrants to the rally, which made up the promenade in front of the famous Blackpool Tower.
The award for ‘Welsh Coach of the year’ was given to Edwards Coaches of South Wales, for the 4th consecutive year marking an incredible start to 2016 for the company. The coach which won the award was the Mercedes Tourismo, part of the make up of a 300 strong vehicle fleet at Edwards Coaches. Used mostly on continental holidays, the Mercedes Tourismo allow for greater passenger comfort and entertainment on board with TV screens fitted throughout the coach.
With the recent investment of £5 million and addition of 19 new coaches, the fleet is growing quicker than ever before as Edwards look to further their reach across South Wales and across the bridge into England
The UK Coach Awards are an annual recognition of achievement within the coaching industry. Held in Manchester, on the evening of 21st April, the awards were coveted in glory and a celebration was had of the travel industry as a whole.
Glyn Bowden driver of the family run Edwards Coaches scooped the award for ‘The UK Top Coach Driver’ of the Year, beating thousands of rival coach drivers across the UK for the second year running. The award follows a very successful 2015 for Glyn, who has since continued his run of successful award wins, moving into 2016.
Following the award win, Glyn who has been driving coaches for over 40 years commented whilst on tour; “I would like to thank Edwards Coaches for giving me the opportunity to do the job that I just love doing – happy days!”
Commercial Director, Jason Edwards FCILT followed this sentiment by saying, “This award is a demonstration of just how hard working all of our tour drivers are, I would like to thank Glyn in particular for his passion, enthusiasm and dedication over his 11 years of service and on behalf of Edwards Coaches, we would like to pass our congratulations to Glyn and to keep up the great work”.

The 5th generation family run business Edwards Coaches established in 1925 are continuing to invest at an astonishing rate. In the month of April, Edwards are taking delivery of 19 brand new vehicles, totalling £5 million.
The new vehicles costing £260,000 each will be used to cover different divisions of the business, 13 coaches fitted with the very latest technical safety systems will be used on the high profile National Express work, 3 for coach holiday tours and 3 for local bus service. The investment of such magnitude is certainly a bold statement from Edwards and a clear message that they remain committed to the highest industry standards for its drivers and passengers safety and comfort.
The financial investment in new assets across the business has also fed down to the shop floor where 30 new jobs throughout the organisation have been created due to record breaking sales and increased levels of business. Edwards Coaches now employ 500 staff and are extremely proud of its workforce, encouraging extremely high levels of staff retention and nurturing the best talent from the local communities of South Wales.
With a further 8 months remaining in 2016, the window remains open for additional investment throughout the year and it appears that Edwards have no intention of halting the growth of their fleet just yet.
If 2015 was an exciting year for Edwards Coaches LTD, then 2016 has certainly continued the trend. A family company based in the heart of South Wales employing over 500 people and travelling 11 million miles per year, the emphasis is set firmly on continued growth.
With 35 existing vehicles within the National Express fleet, Edwards are among the largest provider of the service within the UK. In April, an additional 13 new vehicles are due to arrive at the Edwards headquarters in Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd following significant passenger growth. With more seats available on all National Express routes to meet the growing customer demand, it is expected to continue to grow at an impressive rate.
The brand new vehicles will be Caetano Levante Volvo’s designed with the highest safety specifications on the road, fitted with Lytx Dashcams, Volvo drive assist safety system, full telematics driver monitoring system and 8 on board CCTV cameras to name just a few of the modern features.
The investment of £3.7 million is a sure statement of intent from Edwards who remain at the height of industry standards for safety and passenger comfort.
